Ronald J. Westman, Sr., 86, of Lexington, NY passed away peacefully in his home on August 13, 2020 after fighting his courageous battle with Cancer.
Ronald was born on March 2, 1934 in Queens, NY. He was the son of the late Edward Westman and Veronica Greenan. Ronald graduated from Newton High School in Forest Hills, NY in 1952. He chose to enlist in the United States Army and served from January 7, 1955-December 21, 1956 where he served during The Korean Conflict. While serving in the Army Ronald married the love of his life, Mary C. Policastro on June 19, 1955. After Ronald was honorably discharged from the US Army, he and his wife moved to Long Island, NY where they started their family. Ronald was employed by the US Postal Service in Long Island for many years. He later chose to move his family to Lexington, NY and transferred to the US Post Office in Kingston, NY before retiring in 1997. After his retirement he started a hot dog wagon business. He always enjoyed talking with all of the people he met during this venture. Ronald had many hobbies including camping, fishing, traveling and raising and flying pigeons. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved to attend his grandchildren’s school events, musical and dance performances. He enjoyed being a part of the Veteran’s Day Ceremonies every year at his grandchildren’s school, where he would love to share his stories with all of the children. Ronald was a very hard worker and a loving, kind and generous man who was always willing to lend a helping hand in any way he could. Ronald is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary C . Westman (Policastro); three daughters; Joanne Noone and husband James Noone of Manorkill, NY, Anne Marie Phelan and husband Darin Peterson of Freehold, NY, and Debora Anne Kappel and husband Justin Kappel of Lexington, NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Melissa Anne Phelan, Private First Class, Eric J. Kappel (US Army), Allyson M. Kappel, and two step-grandchildren, Kirstyn and Kaitlyn Peterson. Ronald is also survived by his brother Thomas Westman, and sisters Mary Roth, Bernadette Westman, Patricia Ford (John), and Veronica Sommer (Ralph). Ronald leaves behind many nieces and nephews, God children and cousins. Besides his Mother and Father, Ronald was predeceased by his son, Ronald J. Westman Jr., Son-in-law, Glenn E. Phelan, brother, Edward Westman, and sisters in-law, June Westman and Mary Westman. Calling hours will be 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at the Aston-Basagic Funeral home, 7742 Main Street, Hunter, NY. Services will be conducted at 12:00 PM at the Funeral Home. A private Mass for immediate family will take place at The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 55 North Lake Road, Haines Falls, NY with Rev. Jay J. Atherton officiating, on Friday, August 21, 2020. Burial will be at the Lexington Cemetery, in Lexington, NY. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Town of Lexington Ladies Auxiliary.
