Stephen J. Tuomey, born July 11, 1934, raised in Cold Spring, NY, passed away suddenly on March 4, 2020. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Vera” Tuomey on June 15, 2019. He is survived by 3 sons, Stephen B. (Kelly), Andrew and Cornelius “Neil” (Tonya) Tuomey. He is also survived by granddaughters Cailyn (Jesse) and Brooke, grandson Michael, and great grandson Jesse James. Steve was one of 5 boys, pre-deceased by brothers James, Brooks, and Peter, survived by one brother Cornelius “Connie” Tuomey, as well as many nieces and nephews with families. He met his wife while working on the hotel industry in New York City. Steve moved his wife and two sons to this area in order to be assistant manager at the New York City Police Recreation Centre in Platte Clove. After a few years, the family moved into the Village of Tannersville where they added 2 more boys. Living in the village, he began to build his greatest relationship with the community. Steve strengthened that relationship with the community by working for Wally Gallagher at Kaaterskill Liquors, bartending at many local establishments, as well as volunteering in many organizations. He joined the Tannersville Fire Department and was part of establishing the Rescue Squad. Over the years, he was also part of the Town of Hunter & Greene County Democratic Committee, National Rural Water Society & Mountaintop Golden Agers. Steve served as Mayor of the village of Tannersville 1977-1979. There were so many activities that Steve was involved in, that even Vera would argue with him about it, but she always knew that he was helping someone out doing it. As what he would do with the community, he also did with his family. Anyone that met Steve was told of his pride towards his family.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers to please donate to the 2 groups that Steve prided himself in, Tannersville Fire Department and the Mountaintop Golden Agers. Services will be at Aston-Basagic Funeral Home in Hunter on March 9, 2020 from 5-8PM and church service on Match 10, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church in Haines Falls at 11 AM. Due to the season, burial will take place later in the spring. At that time, Stephen will be buried alongside his wife Vera and son Michael. He will never be forgotten by many he touched.
