Lifelong Mountaintop resident Berna Showers , 82, died Tuesday, August 13th.
Born October 24, 1936, in Tannersville, New York, she was the daughter of the late Willis “ Whitey” and Erma (Bunt) Young. Berna worked for the Hunter-Tannersville Central School District as the secretary to the principal and guidance counselor for many years before her retirement. She was remembered affectionately for touching the lives of many of the school children . A community minded person with many interests, Berna was a founding member of the Tannersville Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary and helped to create the local snowmobile club. She was also very active in local politics. Most recently, she took pleasure in taking part in area antique car shows and was quite proud of the numerous trophies she earned for her 1936 Ford Coupe and her beloved 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Her greatest source of pride and pleasure was being part of the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was the loving matriarch of the Showers family. Berna was the devoted mother of Laura (Marty Murin) and Steve (Kathy Larkin) as well as the doting grammy to Christoper, Sarah, Heather, Molly, and James. Other surviving family members include two brothers in law, Ed Kebabjian of Loudonville, Eric Johnson of Haines Falls, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Berna was predeceased by her husband Bruce Showers, her sisters, Nancy Kebabjian and Linda Johnson, and her brother, Willis Young. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Friday, August 16, at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Hunter. Services will be conducted on Saturday, at 3 pm, at the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church in Tannersville. Burial will be in The Evergreen Cemetery in Tannersville.
