Mary C. (Policastro) Westman, 84, of Lexington, NY passed away peacefully in her home on September 11, 2020 after a long illness.
Mary was born on November 19, 1935 in Queens, NY. She was the Daughter of the late George Policastro and Carmella LaPolla. Her beloved Husband, Ronald, of 65 years, predeceased her very recently on August 13, 2020. She now joins him in Eternal Life. Mary married the love of her life, Ronald J. Westman, Sr., on June 19, 1955, during his service in the U.S. Army. After he was honorably discharged from the US Army, they moved to Long Island, NY where they started their family. They moved their family to Lexington, NY in the late 1980’s, fulfilling Mary’s lifelong dream to live in the mountains. Mary had many occupations. She was a Homemaker, Home Health Care Aid, Certified Nurse’s Aid, and Private Duty Health Care Aid. She also worked for Nursing Home in Long Island, NY. She loved to take care of people in need. She always took pride and joy in taking care of her sick and elderly patients. She was a caring woman who had a warm regard and feelings and love in her heart for others. She was always energized and fulfilled through her loving and giving character and personality. She enjoyed making others laugh and be happy, and feel comforted. Mary had many hobbies including care giving, cooking, baking, gardening, camping, and traveling. She loved to cook and prepare meals for everyone. She took great pride in it always. No one ever left her table hungry. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She and her husband enjoyed dedicating themselves to being care givers of their Grandchildren while their daughters worked. She loved to attend her Grandchildren’s sports competitions, school events, musical and dance performances. Mary was a very hard worker and a loving, kind and generous woman. She was always offering her time to help anyone in need. She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Haines Falls, NY, where she volunteered a lot of her time, including being a Eucharistic Minister, Religious Education Teacher, and Bingo. Mary is survived by her three Daughters; Joanne Noone and Husband James Noone of Manorkill, NY, Anne Marie Phelan and Husband Darin Peterson of Freehold, NY, and Debora Anne Kappel and Husband Justin Kappel of Lexington, NY. She is also survived by three Grandchildren, Melissa Anne Phelan, Private First Class, Eric J. Kappel (US Army), and Allyson M. Kappel; and two Step-Grandchildren, Kirstyn and Kaitlyn Peterson. Mary is also survived by her two Brothers, Alfred Policastro and Richard Policastro. Mary leaves behind many Nieces, Nephews, God Children, Cousins, and her dog Patches. Besides her Mother, Father, and Husband, Mary was predeceased by her Son, Ronald J. Westman Jr.; Son-in-law, Glenn E. Phelan; and Brothers, George Policastro and Anthony Policastro. Calling hours will be at Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main Street, Hunter, NY, 12442 on Sunday, September 20, 2020 from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm. Services will be conducted at 12:00 pm at the Funeral Home on September 21, 2020. A private Mass for immediate family will take place at The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haines Falls, NY with Rev. Jay J. Atherton officiating, on Monday, September 21, 2020. Burial will be at the Lexington Cemetery, in Lexington, NY. Appropriate face coverings will be required due to COVID-19 Regulations. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to the Town of Lexington Ladies Auxiliary.
