John H. Kliegl II

10/23/2021

John was the grandson and grandnephew of the inventors of the Klieglight.  After years of international travel with his parents and sisters, he took the lead of the iconic Kliegl Brothers in New York, following the tragic death of his father. He ushered that company through the years, and enjoyed his retirement.

A life-long outdoors man, there was nothing he loved more than a long walk in the woods with his favorite children, his dogs. He is predeceased by his father, Herbert Kliegl, his mother, Ruth Bungay Kliegl, and his sisters Patricia Ann Nagele and Joan Bungay Turley. He is survived by his sons Robert and John III, daughter Karen, and cherished granddaughter, Hailey, who are all quite sure he is having a great time right now looking down at them from above with his wife, Sue, and the dogs who he lost along the way.

A memorial will be held at a later date in the summer of next year in Haines Falls, NY.

I love and miss him very much, he was such a great grandfather. I remember building plastic bottle boats with him, I keep this happy memory with me.

John was our friend and neighbor in Forest Hills and Elka Park. We were so lucky to be able to buy our cottage from him 41 years ago!
We all enjoyed his early morning visits when he stopped by for his cup of coffee - he will be missed!

I have fond memories of Kliegl Bros and John. I worked there briefly in the 1970’s and learned a ton. I especially enjoyed finding John in the light lab at the end of the day working on an optical design(analog) for Abe Fader or some other NY lighting consultant or designer. He seemed to be in his element during those times.

He always treated me with respect and kindness.

I met John about 40 years ago when my company was a supplier of
parts to Kliegl Lighting. We quickly became great friends thru our shared love of the outdoors. John was a truly terrific outdoor companion. I will always remember our Elka Park adventures among many other outdoor trips.
Bobby and John - I loved your Dad and I will miss him.
