Gladys Lillian Young VanValkenburgh 88 of Tannersville, Lexington, and Valatie, NY passed away peacefully on Thursday evening April 23rd, 2020 at Robinson Terrace Nursing Center in Stamford, NY. She was born in Tannersville on June 5th, 1932 the daughter of the late Floyd and Florence Young. Gladys was a graduate of the Hunter- Tannersville Central School Class of 1950. In her early years Gladys worked at Lackey’s Drugstore, Warm’s restaurant and then joined the hospitality team at Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl. She later along with her husband Les, formed VanValkenburgh Home Construction of which she assumed the role of office manager.
A loving mother and homemaker, Gladys was a remarkable cook and enjoyed hosting get-togethers for family and friends. She was an avid New York Yankees fan, and she loved to travel. Gladys was very loved, she was kind, caring, fun to be around, and her laugh was infectious. Most of all, the love that Gladys had for her family was immeasurable. Her beautiful heart and soul will be sadly missed. Gladys was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Leslie I. VanValkenburgh, her daughter Renee L. Welch, grandson Kyle M. Leach, brothers Floyd A. Young Jr., Donald F. Young, James N. Young, and sisters Lillian Hornbeck, Dorothy J. Young, and Arlene Darakjian. Gladys is survived by her son Daryl F. VanValkenburgh, daughter in-law Kay VanValkenburgh of Prattsville, daughter Kelly J. Leach, son in-law Matthew Leach of Tannersville, 9 grandchildren, Kelsey Leach Ormerod, Kody Leach, Kaeden Leach, Kimberly VanValkenburgh Pickett, Daryl VanValkenburgh Jr., Jessica VanValkenburgh Smith, Travis Welch, Trevor Welch, Tiffany Welch and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral Arrangements: Future Family graveside burial at Westkill Cemetery.

To all of Dorthy's Family, May her soul rest in eternal peace. I met her a few times at our H T C Alumni Reunions and we remembered all our families. She was a lovely lady. God bless you one and all.

I still remember Gladys's laugh. She was a close friend of my mother when their children were going to HTC. What wonderful memories of Les, Gladys and children when we all lived in Lexington!
