Adele Rose (nee: Boracchia) Kerr, age 84 of Hunter, NY passed into loving angels’ arms on Friday, July 13, 2018 after a valiant and long struggle with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Adele was born October 1, 1933 at Marsania Hospital in Bronx, NY to loving parents, Giaccomo Boracchia and Mildred Bialo Pietrovich Boracchia, and brother Joseph. Adele grew up in the Old Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and worked in her parents’ Italian restaurant, Yeats Petitpas. During her teens, Adele pursued a modeling career in New York City, and also traveled to the Catskill Mountains with her parents and cousins during the summer months to work at a boarding house - summers that lead to her meeting her future husband, Claude Egbert Kerr, Jr.. Adele and Claude married on December 15,1951 at their home in Hunter - a home that would eventually be complete with thoroughbred race horses, burros, ponies, cows, chickens, dogs and cats. Adele and Claude co-owned a plumbing and heating business with Claude’s father, Claude Egbert Kerr Sr., and grandfather Egbert Nelson Kerr (this started after Claude was honorably discharged from the US Navy), and were married for 39 years until Claude’s passing in 1990. Adele and Claude gave birth to a son, Douglas Claude Kerr, on June 15,1953, and a daughter, Christina Adele Kerr, on November 16, 1960. After Christina’s birth, Adele went on to become office manager at Scribner Hollow Motor Lodge (a position she would hold for 47 years), a real estate agent, a professionally certified court reporter, and Village of Hunter Justice and was a member of the New York State Magistrate’s Association from 1981-1994. At one point in the late 1970’s, Adele was the Village of Hunter Justice, her son, Doug, was the Chief of Police, and her husband, Claude, was the Mayor of Hunter and Police Commissioner - a trio that could not be beat. Adele watched her children grow, get married, and even welcomed two grandchildren - David Bernard Galin (1989) and Jeffrey Douglas Galin (1991). Adele was also the resilient matriarch of her family during and after the unexpected passing of her son, Doug, at age 49 due to a hereditary heart condition in April 2003. Beginning in 2007, Adele enjoyed the final decade of her life living with Christina and her son-in-law, Dennis Galin, along with her grandchildren, and two pets, Cocoa and Buddy, and retired from Scribner Hollow Lodge in 2011. Adele was predeceased by her parents, Giaccomo and Mildred, her husband, Claude, her son, Doug, and her brother Joseph and his wife Louisa, a step brother Edward Cusick. Adele leaves behind her daughter, Christina, son-in-law, Dennis Galin, and grandson’s David (Calee Oas) and Jeffrey, as well as two nephews, three step nieces, and one step nephew, many cousins and friends. Adele was sassy and strong-willed, was an excellent story teller, and was highly respected and loved by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Aston Basaigic Funeral Home (7742 Main Street., Hunter, NY 12442) from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, August 3, as well as a mass at the Immaculate Conception Church on North Lake Road in Haines Falls, NY on Saturday, August 4 at 11:00 AM, with burial to follow at Maplewood Cemetery, Route 23A, S. Jewett, NY. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Adele’s honor to the Columbia/Greene Humane Society, Hudson, NY, or the Alzheimer’s Association.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Adele since 1972. A remarkable and very special woman. In 1991 and 1992 we spent many a quiet night at Scribner Hollow during and off-season. It was a delight to cook for Adele and be able to enjoy her wonderful company.
